How to style an open shelf

Group in threes, leave space and mix textures: a stylist’s rules for shelves that look calm.

Recycled Glass Stem Vases, set of 3

A styled shelf should look like it happened naturally. A few simple rules get you most of the way there.

Group in threes

Three objects of different heights, like a tall vase, a small bowl and a candle, look balanced. Pairs look formal; single objects look lost.

Leave a third empty

Empty space is what makes the rest look chosen. If a shelf feels busy, take one thing away before adding anything.

Mix materials

Glass catches the light, clay adds weight, wood adds warmth. One of each on a shelf already feels designed.
