Houseplants that love terracotta

Unglazed clay breathes, which some plants adore and others do not. Here is how to choose.

Terracotta Planter

Terracotta is porous: water and air move through the clay. That is perfect for plants that hate wet feet, and less so for those that like to stay moist.

Perfect in terracotta

Succulents, cacti, snake plants, rosemary and most herbs. The clay wicks away extra water and keeps the roots healthy.

Better in glazed pots

Ferns, calatheas and peace lilies like steady moisture. A glazed ceramic or concrete planter keeps the soil from drying out too quickly.

Always use a saucer

Terracotta sweats a little after watering. Our planters come with a saucer so your shelves stay dry.
